Design

Classic Head Liberty, no motto on reverse — the 'new tenor' gold after the 1834 weight reduction. Charlotte, Dahlonega, and New Orleans join in 1838–39.

History

Struck after Congress cut the gold content so the coins would stay in the country instead of being melted. 1838-C is the first Charlotte gold. A short, complete type that type collectors can still finish.
