Seated Liberty by Gobrecht after Thomas Sully; flying eagle reverse by Titian Peale. Starry vs. plain fields, name-below-base vs. in-the-field, original vs. restrike — a catalog of its own.

History

Patterns that escaped into circulation, then restrikes for collectors in the 1850s–70s. The 1836 originals (Judd-60) are the coins most people mean. The flying-eagle reverse later inspired the Flying Eagle cent. Alignment (coin vs. medal turn) and die cracks separate originals from restrikes.
