History

Never popular in commerce — Mexican dollars and gold dominated. Many were exported and melted. 1851, 1852, and 1858 are low-mintage proofs/business hybrids; 1870-CC is the first Carson City dollar. The Coinage Act of 1873 ('Crime of ’73') ended the denomination in favor of the Trade dollar.
