Design

Liberty stepping through a gate with a shield and olive branch. Type 1 (1916–17) is bare-breasted; Type 2 adds chainmail and three stars under the eagle. Date wear is a chronic problem — MacNeil placed it on a high pedestal.

History

MacNeil’s quarter is Beaux-Arts America on a 24 mm disc. 1916 mintage is 52,000, the key. Full Head is the strike grade: Liberty’s hair, ear, and laurel leaves complete. 1918/7-S is the overdate. No 1922 issue; 1930 is the last year before Washington’s bicentennial quarter. The design never returned, which is why original Type 1 pieces in high grade feel like a short, luminous chapter.
