Design

Seated Liberty adapted from the quarter; reverse a standing eagle by Barber. Plain edge was supposed to distinguish it from the quarter. It did not.

History

A western-states experiment to make change for a silver dollar without using the half. The public confused it with the quarter, and the denomination died in four years. 1876-CC is a major rarity (a few dozen); 1877–78 are proof only.
